So my father is retiring up here in a few years to Maine, we are just in the final stages of closing on a house that we were looking at for the second half of 2014. Lots of work had to get completed and I think we are there. But here is the question. My pops has a 2WD 09 Tacoma with 85K on it, bone stock. Thing will probably last forever, total strip show (slushbox though) he got during cash for clunkers, his old 89 Wrangler was rotted to hell, so of course he was going to get $4500 for it. He has been keeping his eyes open for a 4wd. An '03 1500 Ram Hemi 4wd with 83K on it came in this weekend, he says it is clean as hell, but I see too many add ons for my taste, and these are not tasteful (but will come off). What should he do, keep the tacoma and get a beater pickup up here to tow the boat 300 feet down to the launch (22-26 foot cabin cruiser) and plow, or get this slutty truck for an even trade on the Tacoma? Usually I say no at just aftermarket headlights

It would depend on how well maintained that Ram was. Some guys that stick all that crap on will just ignore all the mechanicals.

I've seen way too many rotted out '01-'03 RAM pickups to recommend one of that age for Maine... Try a set of 4 snow tires on the Taco and see how it does. I bet it will be good enough, and a lot cheaper!

Stick with the Taco. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

yeah that is what I told him, as soon as it hits a Maine winter the clock is ticking

That much Pep Boyz shit on a truck makes me think it has been used, abused and not maintained. I would be very nervous about buying something that looks like that. Factor in the cost to get back to the stock headlights and fix who knows what else is wrong and that could turn into a money pit in no time.
If your only concern is winter driving just throw a set of winter tires on the Taco and a couple tubes of sand in the bed and you're good to go. As for towing the boat, if it is really only 300 feet that you'll be moving it every once in a while the Taco should be fine. Whether or not it will have enough traction to get it out of the ramp is another discussion. If he will need to tow the boat any distance you will probably need to look into something a little bigger to tow that size boat.

this is exactly my thoughts on the thing. It literally is to tow a boat 300 feet, and the landing isnt too steep. I agree, run the Taco, buy a plow truck with 4wd and a decent engine for a couple grand (ram charger, Bronco) and use that to get salt all over it

The Ram will last as long as the Tacoma if cared for and probably be more comfortable.

yeah, the Tacoma isnt great at anything. We just have to see what it looks like inside the motor, as much as we can. One of my concerns is just getting it through 2 years till he does retire in CT traffic.

That would be my advice. You should be able to get a plow truck for fairly reasonable and that will keep the abuse off the DD.

Also, Maine is a great place to lease thanks to the winters! Not sure if he has a fixed income that would allow a lease payment, but once the Taco wears out or starts to rot it's worth considering. For some people the math works out over time.

I think once the CT house is sold they will have enough of a nut to just buy some cars flat out. I am pretty sure they want to just have everything paid off. But actually not a bad idea.

Late 90's and early 00's had shit for tranny's. Not sure exactly which year Dodge changed out the transmission to one that was worth a shit, but I know for fact up to '02 they were absolute junk and barely lasted 75k. Just an FYI.

ok good info to have. I never trust Mopar trannies from 1990+ as far as I can throw them. Unless it is a 727 that is

Get a second truck before a straight up trade on that...
I suppose if he really is in lust with that Ram, it's a different story. You will want to look under that rear wheel well trim ...this vintage has a nasty habit of rusting through there. Maybe it isn't as clean as it appears?

I told him that exact same thing. Could be why those are on there, to fix a crappy repair or to hide it. I agree
